Chile is often seen as a leader in sugar regulation.
Its per capita sugar consumption has declined in the last decade, partly as a result of new government initiatives. Foods deemed unhealthy may not be advertised to children and must carry warning labels.
Chile also has a long history of taxing soft drinks, with the first tax emerging in the 1960s.
Chile makes sugar from beet and also imports sugar, predominantly from Argentina.
