- Florida has received more rain this November than it’s received in at least a decade (for the month).
- With this, its agricultural yields should increase, but its sucrose yields will likely be diluted and weaken as a result.
- We currently think Florida will produce 17.5m short tons of cane in 2020/21.
Floridian Cane Production Hits 10-Year High
- The US produces approximately 32m short tons of sugarcane each year, with around 17m tons coming from Florida.
- This season, we think Florida will produce 17.5m short tons of sugarcane; a level not seen for at least a decade.
- Its cane production has been on the rise ever since 2016/17, as years or minimal rainfall came to an end and allowed its cane crops to flourish.
- And even though this year’s precipitation levels have not been as high as they were in 2017, November’s levels are the highest they have been in at least 10 years (for the month).
- For this reason, the canes’ agricultural yields could be the best they have been for a long while, totalling 43.9 tonnes per acre.
- The only issue is that these strong November rains could now weaken the canes’ sucrose yields, as the excess water will cause the sugar content to dilute.
- We subsequently think Florida’s sucrose yields will amount to 12.18% this year, which is slightly worse than they were last season, but not as bad as they were in 2018/19.
