What have you been up to?
We have hoed cane ratoons this month. I can finally catch my breath a bit before the hoeing of newly planted canes begins. This year’s Guangxi March Third Festival fell between April 21 to 23. Others were singing folk songs and dancing while we were raking the soil in the fields.
We are using pesticide fertiliser this year for the first time. I’m looking forward to its effect. I’m sure all farmers have the same inner cry: “Do you know how expensive fertilizer is?”
Crop Stage?
Very surprising and unexpected is that after a few days of light rain, the water level of the Nanjiang River rose back. So far the sugarcane crop is doing well. This year, all the mechanically harvested fields, no matter what kind of cane variety, are doing far better than manually harvested fields. Po also thinks so!
In a test field of 1.4 metres of equal row spacing that has been mechanically harvested for four years, the canes have grown well, but some of them have died due to pest damage.
Speaking of mechanical harvesting, Lot No.7, located off the rural road, covers an area of more than 90 mu (6 hectares), of which more than 30 mu adjacent to the road is a depression up to three meters deep. In the past six years, we have carried out three large-scale soil transport to fill the depression, and spent hundreds of thousands of yuan. Finally, it’s flattened for free machinery operation.
We did not expect that the expansion of the village road would increase the road surface by 58 cm, so we had to pull the soil to make a slope again.
What Are Your Concerns?
In recent years, extreme weather has occurred frequently. We worried our hearts out over this worthless sugar cane. Sugar cane is most afraid of drought, but the rain in recent years is very stingy. In particular, the current planting of sugarcane varieties of weather requirements is quite high.
GT44, GT55 and GT58, which we have expanded in small areas, have all begun to sprout. The largest and earliest, No. 05-136, is still languid. I’m not sure if or how much it will produce…
Summarizing the planting experience of sugarcane 05-136 for many years, it is the most demanding on the quality of the stem and the growing environment, the emergence of good mainly depends on luck! So far this year, the rains haven’t been good, and I’m tired of worrying about another year of drought.
