- Thailand exported 242k tonnes of white sugar in April, down 68k tonnes month-on-month (MoM).
- The largest offtakers were Vietnam (52kmt), Cambodia (38kmt), China (33kmt) and Taiwan (31kmt).
- Thailand have exported 1.1m tonnes of white sugar so far in 2020.
White Sugar Shipments: Down, But Only Just
- Thailand’s pace of exports was slightly down in April compared to the previous month.
- It was also nearly 60k tonnes lower than in the same month last year.
- Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Taiwan were the biggest offtakers in April, as if often the case.
- Vietnam saw the largest monthly reduction 29k tonnes; this certainly impacted the overall difference between March and April’s line up.
- White sugar shipments to Indonesia from Thailand remained low.
- In contrast, white sugar flows from India to Indonesia have surged recently.
- Halfway through May, Indonesia had nominated just under 100k tonnes of Indian white sugar; they have nominated far less from Thailand (11k tonnes).
Top Refined Destinations (2020)
- Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Taiwan are amongst Thailand’s top 10 smuggling destinations so far in 2020.
- These four regions continued to be a strong presence in April’s line-up, having had relatively consistent offtakes for months.
- The refined sugar market will be undersupplied for much of 2020, following poor crops from Thailand, the USA and Mexico in the 19/20 season.
