- Indian should produce 26.5m tonnes of sugar this season.
- For the first time this season, crushing in Uttar Pradesh (UP) is starting to fall behind last year’s rate.
- The overall rate of production is now steeply declining across all other regions as well.
India’s Production Rate Continues to Decline
- India has produced 23.3m tonnes of sugar to date; this is more than 6m tonnes behind last season’snumber.
- The rate of cumulative sugar production is slowing down, running almost parallel with the past two seasons.
- Only 186 mills remain crushing in India, down 22% on the number of operational mills this time last year.
- Despite the disruptions being caused by the recent nationwide lockdown measures, India’s production number has not significantly deviated from our estimates.
Uttar Pradesh: Slowing to a Jog
- Total production in UP has already exceeded MH’s and Karnataka’s (KN) combined production number.
- Only 2.9m tonnes of production is left to meet our estimate, as 9.57m tonnes of sugar has been produced so far.
- UP’s production rate for the 19/20 season corresponds to that of the previous two seasons.
Maharashtra: Nearing the End
- The Maharashtrian rate of sugar production has almost halved in the last fortnight.
- Production was nearing 5.9m tonnes before crushing rates started declining.
- We think MH will produce 6m tonnes of sugar this season.
- With only 28 mills left in operation, however, sugar production is still 50% behind the previous crop.
Karnataka: Nearing the End
- Only 5% of the mills are still in operation.
- As expected, less than 100k tonnes of sugar has been crushed in the last fortnight.
- Production will fall around 25% short of last season’s rate.
