We currently think Thailand will export 4m tonnes of sugar in 2020/21, down 1.82m tonnes from 2019/20.

This is because severe drought across the past two season crippled Thailand’s cane and sugar production.

The picture looks more positive in 2021/22, at least.

Thailand’s already received 1,550mm of rain, which is more than enough for its cane to survive the forthcoming dry season. We therefore think it’ll export 6.7m tonnes of sugar, up 2.7m tonnes year-on-year.
