End of The Crop 2020/21 – Within the Expected
- The 2020/21 crop ended, crushing 605.46mmt of sugarcane and producing a record of 38.5mmt of sugar – 2.6% and 43.73% higher than last season, respectively.
2021/22 Crop – Slower Start Due to Dry Weather
- Despite the second half of March being categorized as 20/21, in practice the mills are starting the 21/22 cycle.
- For the period, only 47 mills were in operation against 87 units last year.
- According to UNICA, by the end of 1H April, about 170 mills should be in operation, still 10 less than on 20/21.
- It is a slower start, but not the slowest one ever seen:
- This happens, as the mills sought to delay the start of crushing as much as possible since some sugarcane fields have not yet recovered from the dry conditions of the last few months.
- For the month of April, the forecast it is still expecting dry weather.
- Although these conditions are positive for the mill’s operations, concerns about agricultural productivity increase after consecutive months with below-average rainfall.
