What Are You Up to On the Farm at Present?
We’re currently taking the time to ensure all our machinery and tractors are working properly as our cane fields are so sodden.
I also have a special project on the go this year, modifying the billet planter I’ve been using since 1998.
It’s very good but very heavy, so I’m splitting it and adding another set of wheels.
It has a three-tonne capacity but instead of all that weight at the front, three quarters of it will be on a new axel at the back, making it easier to turn and keep the rows straight.
What Stage is Your Crop At?
It’s growing season and my cane is very advanced, about six weeks ahead of where it was this time last year. The weather has been very cooperative so far, with good rain followed by periods of sunshine.
What Are Your Biggest Concerns at Present?
The weather is always a concern at this time of year. This is when cyclones form in our region. We’ve had some strong ones in the past, including Cyclone Debbie in March 2017 and Cyclone Ului in March 2010.
On the business side, input costs remain a big concern. Fertiliser, which 12 months ago cost around 800 USD/mt now costs 1,400 USD/mt.
What Are You Doing Differently This Year?
I’m doing less field this season, so am using the time to catch up with paperwork…not my favourite task.
2022 is an election year for Australia too and we’re already being visited by politicians. We’re using the opportunities to explain our industry and how important it is for our regional and the national economy.
