What’s been going on at your farm, Hugh?

It’s not rained very much. March 75% of normal, April 25% and May looks like, at best, 50% of normal.

The sugar beet has been drilled and we have done around 80% of the corn planting.

We have finished applying fertilizer to all our crops except corn.

Many lambs have arrived.

At What Stage Are Your Crops?

The rye is into ear emergence, the wheat soon will be showing flag leaves and the sugar beet are popping their heads over the parapet, to see if there are any aphids about – and before you ask, yes, there are.

What Are Your Greatest Concerns?

As ever, our political leaders who seem to be a little lost at the minute. That’s probably down to the hangovers.

Food poverty is now much talked about, even the supermarkets are suggesting taxing the oil companies so that people can eat.

 

What Are Your Ambitions for the Year?

To carry on doing what we’re doing only slightly better.
