Smoke has been sighted from 3pm local time coming from the Baltimore sugar refinery. As of yet, the full extent of the damage is unknown, but the raw sugar storage shed has been severely damaged.

  • At time of writing, the flames appear to be under control and concentrated around the storage shed.
  • It’s believed one of the sugar conveyer belts caught fire, leading to the silo catching fire.
  • We don’t yet know if any other part of the refinery has been damaged.
  • The Baltimore refinery processes over 600k tonnes of raw sugar in an average year.
  • This fire could therefore have implications for American raw sugar imports for the rest of this year.
  • In 2007, an accidental explosion caused serious damage to the refinery and the powdered sugar facility.
