India Produced Almost 250k Tonnes of Sugar Per Day in December
- In the last two weeks of 2020, India produced 3.65m tonnes of sugar; this is almost 250k tonnes per day.
- This makes it its third-highest fortnightly production on record, falling just behind 2H December and 2H January 2018/19.
- Such a strong pace has been achieved as 481 mills are now fully operational.
- In the record-holding 2018/19 season, 501 mills were operating at this stage.
- India’s sugar production totals 11.02m tonnes to date, marking only the second time its production has exceeded 11m tonnes by the new year.
Karnataka Made a Rapid Start
- Karnataka has produced 2.4m tonnes of sugar so far this season, up 370k tonnes from the last record held in 2018/19.
- 66 mills are now operating here, compared to 63 in the same stage of the last couple of seasons.
Uttar Pradesh Also Started Well
- Production also started well in Uttar Pradesh, with 3.3m tonnes of sugar produced by the end of December.
- 1.1m tonnes of sugar was produced by 120 mills in 2H December compared to 119 last season.
Maharashtra Slips Behind 2018/19’s Pace
- Maharashtra has produced 4m tonnes of sugar so far this season, making it its second-fastest start on record.
- 179 mills are now crushing, which is five fewer than in 2018/19 but 44 more than last season, where operations were impacted by water shortages.
