Insight Focus

2024/25 global sugar production will be the second highest on record. This is thanks to increased output from the EU and Thailand.

2024/25 at a Glance…

Global Sugar Production

We expect global sugar production to reach 186.5m tonnes in 2024/25, down by 0.9m tonnes from our previous estimate. Although production will be slightly lower, it will still be the second highest on record, tailing shortly behind the 2017/18 season.

The slight decrease in production for the 2024/25 season is due to some revisions made to production figures in smaller sugar producing regions.

Global Sugar Consumption

Global sugar consumption has risen continuously in line with population growth and will exceed 180m tonnes in 2024/25.

Our estimates for global consumption have also been reduced by 1m tonnes. The reduction mainly comes from the EU, where consumption will be lower next season.

Large Production Surplus in 2024/25

Another season of record output from CS Brazil and rebounds in EU and Thai sugar production could result in a large production surplus of 5.5m tonnes.

Production Update: EU-27

In the 2024/25 season we expect the EU to produce 17.2m tonnes of sugar which is an increase from the previous season.

This growth is driven by higher beet acreage which is up by 5% for the 2024/25 season. It has taken 2 seasons of higher beet prices to incentivise the expansion in acreage.

Despite this, weather risks and beet yellow virus have been an issue in recent seasons and cannot be ruled out for the next season.
